Alex Rentoul went to Papua in 1913 as an employee of Burns, Philp & Co., but was soon working with the Australian administration in the Public Works Department. After the war, during which he fought with the A.I.F., Rentoul worked again with the administration as a Patrol Officer and later Resident Magistrate. He retired in 1942.
